MGT 1500

Foundations of Business

MANAGEMENTOLIN BUSINESS SCHOOL

Provides business students with an introduction to each of the functional areas of business as well as the skills needed to solve complex business problems. As students work to solve an assigned business case problem, they will build skills in teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and an understanding of the complex interplay of business functions. Fall semester enrollment is only open to incoming business freshmen, and students must be concurrently enrolled in MGT 1000. Spring enrollment is only open to students planning to do an Internal Division Transfer (IDT) to the Olin Business School who have already completed MGT 1000 or are concurrently enrolled in it.

Dean LaRose is a good professor, but the course leans far too heavily on group assignments that are ambiguously worded and graded as if by an invisible rubric known only to a higher power. The course setup makes it far too easy for freeloading group members to tank your grade while contributing little more than their ID to the final submission.

This course is a complete waste of time. The speakers range widely, but most were incredibly boring. Grading is very nitpicky, with little to no feedback provided, and is not released until late December. Your grade is a mystery. Grade scale is insane (>95 for an A). The case assignment is painful, with unclear expectations and group freeriders.

Awful. The assignment instructions are painfully unclear, yet her grading is extremely nitpicky. The speakers were monotonous and added nothing that wasn't covered in orientation. The "assignments" themselves were pointless busywork. The grading scale is absurd (92 is a B+), and with such unforgiving grading-earning an A (95) is nearly impossible.

Dean LaRose is a kind lady who is more than willing to answer any question and greets everyone with a smile every class. She brought interesting, enlightening professors to enrich and immerse students in the business curriculum. Attendance was mandatory as class was once per week, and participation points were deducted if you did not attend.

This class gives you an intro to many different areas of "business." Its a very easy class and graded very lightly.
