Management Communication

MANAGEMENT

Managers who write and speak effectively excel in business leadership. Persuasive and authentic communication is not only useful in advancing your business career; business employers also consider communication skills to be the most important attribute in people they hire. Effective communication involves more than mastering technical writing and presentation skills. Successful communicators use critical thinking to assess business scenarios and the audience who will hear or read a message; they craft communication in order to attain targeted results. This course gives you the opportunity to become a more polished communicator as you work toward the following goals: Applying rhetorical principles to management communication; Using critical thinking to analyze the audience, the organizational environment, and problems before choosing communication strategies; Implementing principles of plain language and effective design; Collaborating with colleagues to create a communication strategy for a live corporate client.

Professor Dorman is so sweet! She cares a lot about her students, and although sometimes the workload can get a little heavy, it's all relatively easy. Although there are some presentations in class, she really tries to make them fun and a safe environment to practice being an effective presenter. Favorite class that I've taken at WashU by far!

The course structure needs to be redesigned. You have to do a lot of busy work that has little to do with improving your networking skills and securing a job. I do not mind the considerable time commitment, but the lack of real-world relevance and highly subjective grading criteria hinder the overall experience.

My mother told me if I don't have anything to say, don't say it all…

I hate this class it is a complete waste of time and it is very time consuming. It is literally forcing us to be pretentious consultants.

this is a 4 credit course, so the workload is heavier than other courses. Rubrics are provided, 2 TAs per class, and a willingness to meet with students whenever. If you don't pass this class, it's totally on you. There is some busy work, but it's about YOU (complete a psychometric, do your resume), so it's all helpful.

Picks favorites. You have to follow exactly what she tells you, otherwise, your grade is impacted. Very much so her way or the highway. Not too hard to do well in the class and some content was useful.

A fair amount of busy work done outside of class, but a very fair and easyish grader. Very nice professor and very presentation based.

Amazing professor!!

Dohrman is a fine lecturer and a good person but the class sucks. So much of it is busy work and she assigns so much of it that it can get annoying with other assignments. As long as you follow the rubric, you should get a A's on the assignments.

I really enjoyed her teaching style and feedback. Some of the work seemed unnecessary, but that's more of a complaint about the course than about the professor. While some of the things we learned were a bit redundant, some things were extremely helpful. There is a lot a lot of work for this class, but nothing too difficult.

Lectures were extremely boring, and there wasn't much that I got from this class. There's a lot of tedious work, and this class is presentation-heavy, with an individual mini-case and a group final presentation. For someone pretty introverted, this class definitely wasn't easy for me, but the grading wasn't super harsh besides the group project.

201 is dull. Typically, I wouldn't fault the instructors for the material they teach but he legit created the class... The grading is ambiguous and subjective, Malter isnt readily available (TAs do all the work), and the lectures are rarely interesting. However, you have to take 201 in Olin and he's easier than Thomas so do with that what you will.

MGT 201 is definitely a useful class, considering that it gives you great experience in real-life consulting. There are no tests; it is mostly project- and presentation-heavy. Dohrman grading is super inconsistent; her instructions for many of the assignments are confusing. Go to the TA; they do most of the grading and know more.

The class was helpful at times, but then other times it was just a waste of time. Some advice and instruction was kinda annoying (how to write emails, using describing words in linkedin, etc.) There is a lot of busy work, but what you put into the class is what you'll get out of it. Staci is pretty nice and funny though so that is good.

To begin, I don't like the class itself. I feel like the assignment instructions are very unclear and the TAs (depending on who you have) can be harsh in terms of grading. Professor Thomas is a great professor but beware that the assignments in the class are very much busy work.

I can't speak for everyone with my review, but Staci was a good professor overall. I will say that I struggled to see the value in what we were learning at some points (I don't think I'll be changing how I write my emails). But some information was valuable, like that pertaining to presentations. Also, the class's workload is QUITE heavy.

Honestly the most frustrating professor I had at Olin. The information is relevant, but I would argue that some of her advice is not necessarily correct in some ways, so double check with career center. Made the class less enjoyable, and ask peers how they were successful for some of these topics as following her content can come off as overbearing

Quality: 3Difficulty: 3Thomas

You get out of this class (and Staci) whatever you put in. Theres a ton of busy work, but the grading isn't super harsh, so as long as you put effort in you'll be fine. Staci does play favorites, but as long as you aren't on her bad side it won't be an issue. Just put in effort and participate, and your grade will work out

Worst class I've ever taken at WashU. I'm a hard worker and got along with Thomas, but was still subject to borderline aggressive grading and feedback. You can't trust that her in-person feedback will be reflected in your grade. For a communications class, this had one of the most overwhelming and unhelpful canvas pages I've ever seen.
