ECON 4315
Market Design
The objective of this course is to study how to design mechanisms to allocate scarce resources and how to create successful marketplaces. We will primarily consider two topics: (1) two-sided matching markets, such as the National Resident Matching Program and the Kidney Exchange for transplants, and (2) auctions used by Google, Facebook, etc. Time permitting, a third topic will be the problem of designing and regulating market platforms, such as the e-commerce markets run by eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist, and applications marketplaces run by Apple, Google, etc., as well as the electronic financial trading platforms run by the NYSE.

Subject is really fascinating and it is taught very well. I was admittedly bored during the lectures but now I think about the content all the time in other classes. Problems and exams are hard but professor Lee is very helpful in office hours and in class — if you attend lecture you’ll get a good grade, he makes this very clear from the get go.

Professor Lee has been one of my favorite professors in my three years here. While his lectures are dull and boring, he truly shines during his office hours where is very willing and excited to walk you through the material at a pace that is comfortable for you. The class material can be difficult but Professor Lee is here to help. The exams are very difficult and no partial credit is given for a 4 question exam. Thankfully exams do not carry much weight in this class as Professor Lee reminds everyone at the beginning of the semester "You are too old to worry about grades." and "Show up and you will be fine."
