MATH 1010
Foundations for Calculus
A limited enrollment class for students planning to take calculus but who need additional precalculus preparation. The course aims to build both the technical skills and the conceptual understanding needed to succeed in calculus. Course emphasizes links between the graphical, numeric, and algebraic viewpoints. A variety of approaches are used to present the material. Prerequisites: 2 years of high school algebra and a course in geometry (or the equivalent).

Schaefer is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He made sure to be available outside of class and did a great job of supporting my class' varying levels of learning. He's responsive, funny, a great lecturer, and his cats are the cutest.

I really appreciated that Shaefer really seemed to care that his students understood the concepts and I really liked the class grading system. It was a very collaborative vibe and he is just very kind.

She is really nice and chill. I think it is inspiring to see a professor who makes material feel simple while building difficulty.

He is seriously the nicest prof ever! He was so helpful to me in office hours. He really cares about his students. People used to sit on the floor of his full lectures because he was so good. He is so funny and ask him about his cat!

Martinez is young and relatable, but an unorganized grad student whose passion doesn't lie in teaching. The course was marketed as one that fulfilled Calc I credit, but it just covered precalculus concepts. Martinez's TAs were unavailable, and her own teaching was rote. Her class did not engage students. We also had 180+ modules of online homework.

Genuinely a great math professor who cares about the success of his students. Easy to follow along with and is always willing to answer questions
