Control Systems
Introduction to the theory and practice of automatic control for dynamical systems. Dynamical systems as models for physical and observed phenomena. Mathematical representation of dynamical systems, such as state-space differential and difference equations, transfer functions, and block diagrams. Analysis of the time evolution of a system in response to control inputs, steady-state and transient responses, equilibrium points and their stability. Control via linear state feedback, and estimation using Leunberger observers. Relating the time response of a system to its frequency response, including Bode and Nyquist plots. Input-output stability and its relation to the stability of equilibrium points. Simple frequency-based controllers, such as PID and lead-lag compensators. Exercise involving the use of MATLAB/Simulink (or equivalent) to simulate and analyze systems.

Reviews
His examples during lectures aren\'t particularly complex, but they provide the foundation for the more difficult/involved work outside of class. I find myself engaged in his lectures and have plenty of "a-ha!" moments, which is rare these days. It\'s a refreshing class design; be ready to think. In-class exam required intuition, not memorization.

He teach 400 level course like 100 level course and only know big idea, play with paramters but never talk about how to formulate them in math.

If you want an engineering exam to be full of short essays and no solid mathematical solutions or interpretations, go for it!

If you do your homework and practice the sample exams, you will do fine. He is very generous with allowing crib sheets. His lectures are very clear, and he is helpful during office hours.

Excellent person who really cares for his students. Lectures can be very long and boring, but his in-class examples are important to pay attention to since they are very similar to the homework problems and tests.

Mr. Hoven is a phenomenal teacher. He explains everything very clearly, has great comments, and knows what material is worth teaching. He is also great at email - I've had him answer an email within 15 minutes at 1:30 a.m. Whatever he's teaching, it will be a good class.

Hoven is a great teacher. He's super organized and the notes he gives you are fantastic. I suggest taking a class with him. He got annoyed when people stopped coming to class towards the end, but all in all he's a pretty chill dude and knows the material pretty well. He's also pretty old school.
