Writing Workshop

COLLEGE WRITING PROGRAM

While different disciplines require different ways of conducting research, all disciplines require that one engage in research in response to and in conversation with others, their ideas, and their research methods. The different ways that we can engage and conduct research -- and what we understand research to be -- is the topic of study. A major emphasis of this course is practice -- moving from an understanding of principles and concepts into a full awareness of how to apply those principles when working on a research project. Over the semester students conduct research on a topic of their choice, which means that this workshop focuses on practical, applied work with sources to provide a good foundation for advanced research and writing in the student's discipline. Accordingly, we will study the different methods by which different audiences and scholarly disciplines select, analyze, evaluate, incorporate, and document the works of others. Ultimately, this course will enhance students' ability to produce scholarly writing that draws on the voices and views of others responsibly, and also speak with its own distinct voice to build original arguments.
