As someone who had A/A+ in all other math classes, even A+ in Syring's 3200, I found Syring's 494 the most terrible class I've ever had. The test questions were impossible and completely unrelated to our homework. Plz avoid a professor who threw impossible questions at his students even in a semester when a global pandemic hit so many ppl hard

Terrible at explaining things, tests have unfair questions that are barely covered in hw/lectures. Please avoid this if possible. Most people who take this class do it bc its a major requirement, so maybe wait until literally anyone else teaches it if possible. Probably the worst professor I have had at washu

My review was taken down. Maybe I should temper my review. Well, here it goes: although sooome people may think Mr., or should I say Dr., Syring is a good Professor, I happen to think otherwise. His condescending attitude is, ummm, quite a disappointment; Im sure he cares about math, but perhaps not teaching. Period. Drop the mic.

Indulges in his student's failure. Makes the hardest stats class at WashU even worse. Bad lecturing: only goes over proofs of theorems and explains them badly. Extremely hard exams: unrelated to what he teaches, involves little concepts mostly calculations (you'd be better-off being a calculator). Doesn't respond to emails. Absolutely merciless.

Worst class I've taken at WashU. Explained simple concepts in round a bout ways that left me feeling confused on the basics. Every time I asked questions in class or in office hours he was snarky and belittling. Averages for every test were at or below failing, with only a slight curve in the end. Considering taking 2200 because I learned NOTHING

Nice person overall. His lectures can be a bit repetitive as a lot of it is proving a concept for a large chunk of time. Tips: stay caught up with the material; if you need help, utilize office hours.

Syring was good at teaching but he taught from the textbook, which was not very good in my opinion. This sometimes lead to some confusion, but he was available to answer any questions. Tests were hard, but there were opportunities elsewhere to make up points. He also listened to what students had to say and incorporated feedback during the course.

Explains concepts well and writes clearly.

Syring is terrible at lecturing, he gives super basic examples then throws impossible homework questions which seem totally unrelated. The textbook he uses has horrible wording too, so it's impossible to understand what the questions are truly asking.
