SDS 2020

Elementary Probability and Statistics

MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICSSTATISTICS AND DATA SCIENCE

An elementary introduction to statistical concepts, reasoning and data analysis. Topics include statistical summaries and graphical presentations of data, discrete and continuous random variables, the logic of statistical inference, design of research studies, point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing, and linear regression. Students will learn a critical approach to reading statistical analyses reported in the media, and how to correctly interpret the outputs of common statistical routines for fitting models to data and testing hypotheses. A major objective of the course is to gain familiarity with basic R commands to implement common data analysis procedures. Students intending to pursue a major or minor in statistics or wishing to take 400 level or above statistics courses should instead take Math/SDS 3200 or Math/SDS 3211. Prerequisite: Math 131

She's super kind and she's always happy to help. There is a lot of homework and her lectures cover lots of content really fast, but she teaches it very well given the short amount of time. Despite all that homework, it's a pretty easy class.

This class isn't as easy as people make it out to be, even if you're good at math. You don't have to attend classes in person but know that you will have ZERO clue what's going on if you don't at least review the lecture slides and try to do the homework on your own (whether that is before or after submission).

Jager is a great lecturer. She’s clear and concise and the fill in the blank style is really nice. There’s no final which was great but the final project was annoying if you don’t have great partners. The exams are pretty easy but annoying because there’s not a lot of questions so 1 question is worth a lot. The homework’s took up the most time for me since it’s all textbook problems but you can easily find answers online. Be careful though because they grade homework on accuracy.

A super easy class if you took AP Stats in high school. Jager is a great teacher and makes everything so clear and understandable. All the notes in class are fill in the blank so it's super easy to follow along. There's weekly homework but it's pretty manageable.

Super kind, breaks down the concepts really well. Pretty easy A in my opinion, just keep up with the homework and the tests'll be fine.

Dr. Jager possesses every quality you would want in a professor. Her lectures are clear and concise, her expectations for the class/assignments are laid out clearly, her exams and grading policies are more than reasonable, and she's an overall kind and caring person.

Jager is an absolute GEM. I had never taken stats before so was a little nervous for this course. She is gives exceptional lectures and is one of the best professors at explaining information in a digestible way. Even though I am not a stats major, I would 100% take another course just to have her as a professor again.

Best professor on campus. Def take her 2200 before taking 3200. The lectures are explained detailed and easy to understand, the hw are helpful. The final project is so easy can literally finish it in 1 hour.

The best teacher ever, and nothing to complain about. Just follow and listen to her class, and she will make your life easier. I wish she could teach more of my stats classes.

Definitely the best STEM professor I have had here at WashU so far. Though it is hard to point out a single highlight, she does just about everything you should expect from a great professor. Her lectures are perfectly clear, the exams are fair, and she is very helpful. I had a great experience and would strongly recommend taking a class of hers.

Dr. Jager is the standard. Crystal clear lectures with guided notes. Exams were overall straightforward. The final is a group project that should be relatively easy to complete and do well on. Respects the students and never talks down to them.

Just amazing idk what else to say. First math class I've enjoyed in a really long time and it ended up probably being my favorite class of the semester. I love you Abigail Jager

Hilarious. Loved him. Not gentle and definitely doesn't hide it when he thinks a question is stupid. Super fair grader and really wants every student to succeed. Go to lecture, he will tell you exactly what is going to be on the exam. Lectures can be boring but that's really the fault of the content. He tries to make it fun.

One of the best lecturers in the math department. Explains concepts extremely clearly and cares about the success of her students. Would highly recommend.

Professor Jager is the BEST math professor i've ever had! Maybe even best professor ever. She cares a lot about her students and their wellbeing. If you are confused with anything in the class, just go to her office hours she will make sure you understand all the material before you leave. I also love how organized her class is!! She's amazing!

Jager has been one of the best professors I've had at WashU. She delivers clear lectures, and always posts review for the exam. I personally liked her teaching style of having fill-in notes. It is a sort of grindy class with 3 midterms, daily hw and quizzes, and a final project, but you can definitely succeed in this class.

Quality: 5Difficulty: 3Jager

Jager is pretty much all you could want from an introductory stats teacher. She explains concepts clearly. In-person lecture attendance is optional, and you'll do great with a combo of recorded lectures on Zoom and reading the textbook. An easy class but definitely not a blow off class.

Solid statistics class, very similar to AP stats if you took that in high school. Chakraborty wants everyone to succeed, can sometimes be hard to follow but as long as you do the textbook homework problems and understand them, you'll be good for the midterms. A final project was in place of the final exam, which was nice
