The course develops basic tools and concepts in strategy formulation, including competitive advantage, value creation and capture, industry analysis, capability assessment, competitive positioning, and strategy implementation. The course is designed to develop students' skills in both analyzing observed strategies and in formulating and implementing new ones.

This class was so awful - the prof just rambles about irrelevant information about her personal life for half of the class time. If you ask her a question she will do anything but answer it, and she is the strictest grader I have ever experienced. Do NOT take her class if you do not have to, any other professor would be better than her.

James was the most subjective person I have ever met, and though she is smart, she shouldn't be a professor. She talks down to her students, and her office hours are practically pointless. She will speak over you at any given moment, not letting you voice any concerns or questions you might have if they disagree with her perspectives or logic.AVOID

Got an A but not worth it. Take a different class. So much busy work. She is also challenging to listen to because course is so hard to follow.

4-6 hrs/week
She’s very accommodating and nice but her slides are poor quality, LOTS of work and 3 exams, 20 page final group paper & presentation as well. Just not worth it for a class you’d expect to be easy

Class is really well organized, uses a lot of practical real-world examples, and she makes the material accessible. If you put in the work, you'll do well in the class. She definitely cares about students learning the material and wants us to succeed. Great class overall.

Has tons of experience and knowledge in finance, strategy, etc. but often rambled about personal stories that didn't seem necessary. I learned a lot through the case studies, but there were A LOT. It was much more work than expected.

I have never had a more incompetent teacher. She spent most of class rambling about unrelated topics - I know more about her life story than I do about any class material - and assigns a TON of work. She can't explain anything clearly and will out student's private conversations and grades to the class without asking permission.

This was the most valuable I class I have taken at WashU. Dr. Kiousis is a fantastic lecturer and cares about students. The cases were really interesting and everything I learned I used in my internship this summer. I felt like it really gave me an edge over the other interns. Would take another class from Dr. Kiousis any day!

I loved this class! Dr K cares a lot about her students and teaches you about really interesting companies. Inspirational teacher who will take time to talk to you about career interests and job prospects. Go to her office hours if you can!

I learned a lot from this class and Professor Kiousis. You study real companies all semester and do a final project on a company you get to choose. It was one of the most valuable classes Ive taken at Olin.

MGT380 is the worst class I've taken at WashU. Uninteresting material, little to no actual discussion, zero expectations or explanations of what assignments are going to look like, very boring lectures. Could not tell you what my grade will be at any given point in the class. Avoid if you can.

Great class if you want to go into consulting. I really like the professor!

Do not take business strategy with Professor Kiousis. Great woman, but the class is entirely unstructured, expectations for assignments are never clearly articulated, and the amount of reading she assigns is ridiculous.

Professor Kiosis is one of the best teachers I ever had! She is super knowledgeable and passionate about teaching. She has a very energetic style. If you do the cases and follow the lectures and participate you will do well AND learn a lot!
