SPAN 3030
Cultures and Communication in the Spanish-Speaking World II
This course is the second part of a two-semester advanced-level sequence. Through the study of a variety of media (written, visual, aural, and digital), students will develop linguistic and cultural competence and gain a general understanding of contemporary issues of interest in Spain, Latin America, and the US. Discussion of a wide array of cultural and linguistic materials will serve as the basis for an exploration of the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Course content is organized thematically into five units: Youth Cultures, Food Culture, New Indigeneity, Environment, and Public Health. The course focuses primarily on writing skills. It is designed to prepare students to proceed to higher-level Spanish courses and to build written and oral proficiency. Fromm Ayoroa in charge.

Reviews
I enjoyed class with Prof. Fromm Ayoroa. The media we consumed for class was generally interesting and she seemed excited to teach it. She's generally very sweet and accommodating, but I do feel like I learned more with other Spanish teachers.

Professor Abomo brings an interesting African perspective to Hispanic studies. She's passionate & knowledgeable in what she teaches! The hw is manageable, consisting mainly of readings, which are for class discussions. Class is mostly discussion, participation expected. Essays are based on class topics and homework. One presentation. No tests.

I haven't had a single Spanish professor that I haven't liked and that remained true after taking Professor Cunill's class (302). She does a great job facilitating conversation and shows that she cares about her students. My conversation skills greatly improved thanks to her and this class so I would strongly recommend taking a class of hers.

This professor truly cares about giving meaningful feedback to her students about their writing, and is always making sure that they understand the course material and feel they are writing about something meaningful to them! The course material was also interesting, current, diverse, and helped facilitate a greater understanding of latin culture.

I took Profesora Anghel's class and it was my favorite Spanish class I've taken. She created a collaborative class environment and supported student participation. She had a deep understanding and passion for topics relating to gender equality and cultural studies and taught us how to properly convey our thoughts in essays. Very kind and helpful.

Prof. Ayoroa is very gentle, understanding, and overall fantastic professor. She gives great feedback on papers, doesn't cold-call, and prompts students to think critically. Her class environment is super low-pressure but not boring at all. If you can, take her section of any Spanish class you need to take. Her spanish is easy to understand too!

[Rating for SPAN 302] Such small class size (10 people) that class discussions are very chill. Discussion topics/questions are interesting. Readings/videos are interesting too. She doesn't really correct grammar, which is something I wished she did more often. Nice class overall.

At first I did not like that she lets students speak english in class. I felt awkward when I would decide to try speaking spanish to practice but she slowly learned her teaching style (it was her first semester teaching) and became much more strict (in a motivating way). Loved the content and discussions, she makes participating easy.

Gets on your nerves very quickly. She nitpicks every sentence you say for grammatical errors but almost in a judging kind of way. She takes forever to grade and her discussion questions are always weirdly worded. Again really easy, but her nitpicking makes me never want to take another class from her.

Great professor! Class usually consists of small group discussions about whatever the homework material is. Homework is definitely mandatory and a little bit heavy but it's always things like watching a movie or reading a book. Would 100% take again. Prof. Anghel was amazing and learned a lot from this class!

Office hours with Anghel were always constructive. Discussion-based class format; she values analysis and understanding over rote learning of content. Detects specific weaknesses in class and consciously makes an effort to strengthen them. I suspect she would teach a class with less predefined of a schedule than 303 even better. Great overall.

The sweetest professor, always accommodating to students. She really takes the time and effort to help you out and make sure you're getting the most out of her class. Regardless of your comfort level with Spanish, if you have the opportunity to take a class with Anghel, I highly recommend it.

Cunill has been my favorite Spanish dept faculty. She is easy to understand, super flexible, and gives great feedback in order to help you improve. She knows some of what 303 assigns is busy work and doesn't really care if you don't do it. She can be a bit monotone but I love her

Genuinely I have nothing bad to say about her. She radiates very bubbly, friendly energy and is always looking to chat with students or encourage them to speak. She does not freely correct grammar as some other professors do, which I think is great because she wants us to mostly get our point across without nitpicking every little thing.

She is so sweet and understanding. Class is sometimes not super entertaining and she does assign a lot of readings and movies to watch and discuss but tbh you do not really have to do that in order to do well in the class. We have papers every few weeks and she gives a 24-hour grace period and gives decent grades most of the time!

Prof. Cunill was one of the better Spanish professors I have had. She was easy to understand when speaking. Participation was encouraged and she was considerate enough so that I felt encouraged and free to participate rather than pressured to. The grading system was not 100% clear, but grades were not strenuous anyway.
