College Writing: Writing Identity
What defines who we are and who we may become? How do class, gender, race, sexuality, and other social forces shape our identities? In what ways are our identities inherent or constructed, claimed or ascribed? In this course, we explore these and similar questions through the work of creative and critical writers, artists, and thinkers. We study key concepts such as double consciousness, intersectionality, and performativity, as well as cultural and historical contexts that influence our understanding of self and community. We consider how social dynamics, power, and privilege affect the language we use and the lives we live. All along, through writing and research assignments and class discussions, we examine and interpret visual, literary, and critical texts in an effort to explore, together, what identity is and why it matters. THIS COURSE SATISFIES THE FIRST-YEAR WRITING REQUIREMENT FOR ALL DIVISIONS.

I don't know why people don't like him. I suck at writing, but got an A.

The professor bases all your subsequent grades on your first paper. If you get a B on the first assignment, that is what you will get for every paper after it. He takes a long time to grade and ends up providing little to no feedback. He also goes off topic a lot and it distracts students from learning.

Dr. Campbell is an amazing teacher who gives amazing feedback. He is very kind and a good listener. He even had my class over for dinner (great cook). I definitely became a better writer because of this class. My only heads up is to participate in the class discussions, it is super important for both your grade and your writing development.

Deanna Benjamin is such a great teacher! The readings are very interesting and made the topic applicable to every day life. It altered the way I viewed the world in many ways. The work is more than many other college writing classes, but I don’t think she generally gives below an A

Campbell is interesting, and class is exciting. He is also aggressive and weirdly touchy with his students. He will give crazy low grades with no feedback. If you solicit help he will meet with you, but it feels almost like he is trying to be unhelpful during meetings. There is no reason to take college writing with such a hard and volatile grader. made lots of memories tho <3

Colin Bassett chillest college writing professor out there. Super lax deadlines for everything. He's really approachable and cares about his students. I feel like I didn't learn a lot from this course but he does provide really good feedback on essays. I know so many people who hated college writing and I didn't!

Colin is super approachable and an easy grader! I'm an engineering student with a heavy courseload, and I still managed to get 100s on 2 papers. A lot of assignment deadlines are super flexible, and he's super kind and easy to talk to if you're struggling. HIGHLY recommend

Without getting too much into details of what happened in our class, it is important to note that reports were filed against Dr. Campbell this semester(FL23). He would take a long time to get our essays back to us. When he would get them back to us, the feedback he would give wasn't helpful. Our averages for each assignment were in the low B range.

An outstanding professor. She is kind and caring, checking in with her students to make sure they're alright, and she only assigns a couple of larger writing assignments. Just know that there will be readings and discussion posts for each class, but they can all usually be done in under 30 minutes. Cannot recommend her class enough.

Pretty easy to get an A if you turn in your work. Colin is very accommodating and understanding. I needed to meet with him urgently when I was working on my research paper, and he made himself available for a meeting immediately. He gives very good feedback which has improved my writing, and he's very knowledgeable in general.

Dr. Hu is an amazing professor who really cares about her students. She makes everyone feel welcomed and greatly improved my writing. She often extends deadlines and makes expectations clear. I went in knowing I was not the best writer, however she built my confidence and made college writing a good experience even when I dreaded taking the class.

Prof Benjamin is nice and helpful! She's clear with expectations. Class is usually engaging/interesting (depends on students though bc it's a small class). Her teaching style is very easy to follow. The work outside of class isn't much until we get to the research paper. If you need help with your paper, meet with her and she will definitely help!

Gives an okay amount of feedback, but the number grade doesn't match the feedback he gives. Lectures mostly about history because that's what he's more interested in. Takes forever to return papers.

Super sweet guy and very approachable for help. The topic was rather boring but he did a good job incorporating lots of different activities that didn't have to do with writing. Also gave lots of room for revision and feedback and was just super caring and understanding. Assignments were very open-ended and flexible.

Yes Dr. Campbell was a tough grader sometimes, but setting up one on one meetings for feedback and ideas on papers was extremely helpful. He also is very experienced in academia with so much knowledge that he is so willing to share if you ask. I definitely became a better writer due to his class.

If you dont want a miserable college writing experience I would avoid him. He can be extremely rude to students at times and was an extremely harsh grader for my class. We usually had our average essays in the C+/B-/B range. Also took months to return essays sometimes. Really disappointed.

i love her so much but there are a lot of writing assignments. She truly cares!

Rita is kind to her students and flexible with extending paper deadlines. But, if you don't write the way she wants or argue something she agrees with, she will grade you down. She also rarely gives full credit for assignments. If you don't already know how to write, don't take her class because I think it's harder than real English major courses.

She was the kindest teacher. Very understanding and gave me an indefinite extension for no points off. Surprisingly enjoyed the class and I think she grades easy (no grades are in yet lol).
