MATH 4540
Partial Differential Equations
Introduction to the theory of PDEs with applications to selectedclassical problems in physics and engineering. Linear and quasilinearfirst order equations, derivation of some of the classical PDEs ofphysics, and standard solution techniques for boundary and initialvalue problems. Preliminary topics such as orthogonal functions,Fourier series, and variational methods introduced as needed.

The exams in this class are very fair. He wants you to succeed and is even available outside of office hours to talk. Office hours have been extremely helpful especially on some of the harder problem sets. He posts notes and solutions to homework to canvas which are super beneficial when studying.

Professor McCarthy does a great job of creating classroom community through student participation and just being a hilarious person. Many (including me) may find his class anxiety-inducing at first because he does cold call, but he never minds if you don't know an answer. Very helpful in OH and kind person. His wife founded Khaldi's.
